5A fantastic new offering from Thermos
By Yanick
I did a lot of research before buying this mug, and here is my review:

Packaging:
It came without a box, simply wrapped in bubble tape. OK, kids had fun popping it, but overall I would expect a little better for a relatively pricey product. If you are planning on giving it as a gift, definitely plan on creating packaging for it.

First impression:
From the first moment, it feels like a high-quality product. Nothing appears to be flimsy, all mechanisms, rubber stoppers, and seal-rings seem very elastic, durable, and give a sense of confidence in their longevity. Even the tea mesh seems to be made of pretty strong plastic. The stainless steel mug itself has nice thick walls, and the overall design is simple, but very elegant.

Heat / Cold retention:
In this area, it does it's job almost too well. 6 hours after filling it with hot water, it was still blazing hot. It's almost like the time stands still inside this mug. After 12 hours, water is still hot enough to enjoy tea/coffee. Even long after 12 hours, the mug keeps water certainly warm. If you really need the mug to keep your tea/coffee hot for hours, you can't do better than this mug.

Cap:
The cup is pretty comfortable to drink from. The lip on the lid feels natural, and its control of flowing liquid is great, especially for how hot my tea was coming out of it. I really like the fact that the lid locks itself when open, and does not try to close on you while drinking. The few small issues are: the lid is directly opposite the area you are drinking from. If you are driving, the lid may obscure your vision, so be careful. I didn't feel this a huge issue and I simply tilted the mug a little to the side, but this is something to be considered. Also, there is a plastic flap attached to the hinge outside of the mug... what is it for? It does not seem strong enough to hang the mug off the back-pack by it... just seems like a half-thought.

Tea strainer:
This is probably the biggest complaint that people had/will have with this product. Yes, it's pretty small (though more than enough for 1 teaspoon of loose tea). No, it does not retract by itself to stop the brewing process. Yes, if you drink black tea and you leave the mug full of hot water with the infuser filled with tea for hours, it will make the tea too strong and not enjoyable. However, here I have to defend the design of this mug:
1. If you don't want to over-steep your tea, after 3-5 minutes simply open the lid and take the strainer out. It's not permanently attached and is very easily removed.
2. If you are concerned about tea not having enough room to "open up", you have a small point. However, I did not notice any difference between tea made with this infuser vs. with a separate, larger infuser that I use for tea pots. However, I really don't want it to be any bigger... see #3
3. If you are driving and can't take out the strainer, you can fill the mug just enough water so that it's not touching the tea strainer when the mug is upright. When you are ready to seep your tea, flip the mug upside down; the top is pretty flat and it should stand like this on a desk or in the car without any problems. Once 3-5 minutes are up, simply flip it upright again... problem solved.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. While the mug certainly has a few design draw-backs, I find them insignificant when compared to the heat retention, built-in tea strainer / filter, and the overall design of the lid and it being perfectly leak-proof.

UPDATE:
OK, now that I've used it for a little while longer, thought I would provide an update. Still love it. Great (almost too good) heat retention, comfortable to hold, easy to clean, and overall the best mug I've ever owned. The ONLY thing that I wish I could change is if the lid hinge would not be directly opposite of the drinking spout. When it's open, it can block your view if you are driving, especially if you have a small head. Overall, I figured out a way of tilting it to the side when drinking, but this is definitely something I found myself struggling with more than once.

In terms of leaks, the only time I noticed a few drops (and I mean a few drops) was when I poured boiling hot water into it and closed it, which no doubt resulted from extreme steam pressure from me shaking it. During ordinary use, I never see any leaks.

4Caution: HOT
By Miss Sam, the Librarian
I happened to get this fancy Thermos and some loose leaf tea on the same day so while I was at work I thought I would make the tea to drink after lunch. Problem is, this Thermos does it's job really well. Even after 5 hours, the tea was too hot to drink from the Thermos. Eventually I poured it into a cup and then it was fine.

It is a little awkward having the tea infuser at the top of the Thermos since you then have to fill it *all* the way up for the hot water to touch it. The Thermos holds about 2 mugs of water but since the infuser is at the top, once you've poured out your first drink, the tea inside is no longer in the hot water.

The lid is secure and tight and has a little lock to keep it from popping open. The drink lip is big so you can comfortably sip from it but it is awkward to pour from so I suggest just removing the lid if you are putting the liquid into a cup.

This is a great Thermos if you're *not* putting boiling water in to it - so coffee, hot cocoa and cold drinks should be great if you put them in around the temperature you want them to be. If you put boiling hot water in there, just be prepared to wait 5-6 hours or have a cup with you.

3an okay little thermos at an okay price
By tomahagne
LID: The lid works great. Closes with a positive click. Has a steel retention ring to prevent accidentally opening. The silicone seal seems to be up to the task. There is a detent that holds the lid in the open position. This is especially helpful so that the lid doesn't close on your nose while drinking. The lid opens all the way with the push of a button. The "spring" that opens the lid is actually a silicone band that appears to be easily replaced, assuming you own a punch & hammer and can find similar silicone bands. It claims to be leak-proof and it definitely did not leak during a casual "torture test" which consisted primarily of tossing it about on the sofa & bed. There are 2 levels to the seal, so it doesn't look like it'll leak as long as the silicone holds up.

LID-CAVEAT: Though the lid may not leak, you may get a little spillage. When you take a sip, some of the beverage will pool around the lip. When you close the lid, the silicone seals the holes, but the little bit that pooled can seep around the edges. Not an actual leak, but annoying.

LOOP: It has a square plastic loop that seems sturdy enough. You could use a carbiner to hang this off your pack or to hang decorative lanyards. I didn't find it particularly useful, but it didn't get in the way, so I didn't care.

LOOP-CAVEAT: I put a mini carbiner on the loop to attach it to my back. If you leave the 'biner on the loop, the lid does not lock in the open position anymore. The lock is one of my favorite features, so I had to ditch the 'biner.

INSULATION: Pretty standard vacuum insulation. Works like a charm. I did not validate the 12-hour hot / 24-hour cold claim, but I wouldn't bank on it. Certainly not if you open it. Every time you open the lid, you shorten the max duration a little. But it did stay plenty hot for as long as I needed it to. You can definitely count on it staying hot for 5 hours with frequent sips.

POUR: Another "feature" is the smooth pour. The vent hole is smaller than the spout hole, which slows down the pour so you don't get a face full of hot coffee or iced tea. Though not a complex feature and generally found on all travel mugs, it certainly worked well. I drank straight from the spout which worked well. However, when the conditions are right, the flow will ebb & surge, which could result in a slight burn to the upper lip.

POUR-CAVEAT: There's a bit of an edge to the bottom of the spout where the lid's tab clicks into place. My lower lip contacted this spot and was slightly distracting, not a deal-breaker, but worth noting in this review. Liquid likes to pool in there, which could spill or even become unsanitary. Please wash that spot carefully.

DURABILITY: Everything about the design is of a high quality. No squeaks, creaks, rattles, or flex to speak of. Very solid product. I dropped it from waist height and dented the steel a bit, bit it kept on truckin'

AESTHETIC: Minimal and attractive.

TEA-INFUSER: This is the only part of the design I disagree with. Tea needs room to relax and bloom. Any confined space, especially one as small as this infuser, will limit the full flavor of tea. Considering the reservoir capacity, this infuser is terribly under-sized. I tried it as intended, using whole leaf green tea. It didn't taste terrible, but I know how this tea is supposed to taste, and it was definitely short in depth & profile. Basically, it turned my favorite loose tea into a cheap tea-bag. I also found that the tea leaves were difficult to remove from inside the tiny chamber. You'd be better off just tossing the loose leaf in the bottom of the thermos.

BOTTOM LINE: Excellent personal thermos, but the tea-infuser is a useless add-on. This same thermos costs an Andy without the infuser. I recommend you buy that instead of paying an Alex more for something you don't need.

EDIT: Since my original review the the price of thermos without tea-infuser has risen and the thermos with tea-infuser has fallen. They cost nearly the same. Buy whichever is cheaper at the moment.
